Donate to Capital Pride!

Capital Pride would like to invite you to be an important part of the special 2010 Pride celebration.

For the first time, we are organizing a silent auction as part of the ten day long celebration from June 4 – 13, 2010. This fundraiser will take place at our 35th Anniversary Gala commemorating Capital Pride's 35th Birthday, 1975-2010 - "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet!" The Party will include a reception, silent auction, and Art for Pride donation show. We are looking for a variety of works of art, experiences, services and goods to make our first silent auction a successful one!

This event will take place at the fabulous Donovan House in Thomas Circle on Wednesday, June 9th, 2010. Amid a backdrop of lively Jazz music and beautiful design, guests will join us in perusing numerous packages and works of art available to the highest bidder. After a short speaking program welcoming the crowd, we'll move up to the roof deck for a casual night of lounging and dancing under the stars to the music of "DC's Best DJ," Keenan Orr! There will be a cash bar and light appetizers.

Please join us in making this exciting, new addition to our line-up a promising event for years to come! Your gift will not only make a critical impact in the lives of clients but you will also receive a wide range of recognition among our many supporters. Your donation will garner:

  • A listing in our annual Pride Guide (if received by May 3rd), available at over 550 distribution locations around the DC metropolitan area;
  • A listing on our webpage at www.CapitalPride.org, which received 3,247 visits PER DAY during Capital Pride 2009;
  • A listing on the event invitation;
  • Inclusion in our event program; and
  • A tax deduction for the value of your donation.

Pushing the boundaries of an art experience

Kate Mattingly reports on an art experience by CausalityLabs at Katzen HERE.

Have you seen this painting?

Have you seen this painting? Looking for its current owner to find out if it can be borrowed for a huge retrospective show featuring the best artists from the last many years of DC's storied art history.

It's called "Last Washington Painting" by Alan Sonneman. A collector named Marc Moyens originally owned it but later sold it, and there is no record of who bought it from him.

Email me HERE if you have any clues as to its whereabouts. Thanks!

Sunday April 25, 2010
2:00 PM

Barnes & Noble
Clarendon Market Commons
2800 Clarendon Blvd. Suite 500, Arlington, VA 22201

Here's a link to the B&N posting:

And here's a blurb on the book:

“Mixing humor with tender moments, Reichs creates an enjoyable journey with wonderful writing and likable characters.”
—Library Journal

Sweet Lips, Tennessee . . . Toad Suck, Arkansas . . . Okay, Oklahoma . . . Truth or Consequences, New Mexico . . . Maeve Connelly's epic road trip is taking her through every colorfully named tiny town in America on her way to the far less imaginatively named Los Angeles, California. With her foulmouthed cockatiel, Oliver, her only companion, Maeve's heading way off the beaten track with little money and a load of painful baggage she wants to leave behind. But when her beloved rattletrap, "Elsie," breaks down outside Unknown, Arizona, she finds herself taking a much longer rest stop than she anticipated.

The only mechanic in the vicinity is on an indefinite walkabout, so Maeve's in for the long haul—and she'll need to find two jobs to pay for Elsie's eventual repair. But she's starting to feel strangely at home among the quirky denizens of Unknown—especially around her new bookstore owner boss—so Maeve is seriously considering saying good-bye to Hollywood for good . . . if she can keep her past troubles from coming to light.

From Kerry Reichs, author of The Best Day of Someone Else's Life, comes a poignant and very funny new novel about finding yourself after finding yourself in the middle of nowhere.

No Impact Man - Earth Day Film & Reception

April 22nd at 6:15pm & 8pm

@ AED Globe Theater (Formerly Visions)
1927 Florida Avenue, NW

FILM INTRODUCED: by Gillian Caldwell of 1Sky.org!

DIRECTED BY: Laura Gabbert, Justin Schein

STARRING: Colin Beavan, and Michelle Conlin

SYNOPSIS:
Author Colin Beavan, in research for his next book, began the No Impact Project. A newly self-proclaimed environmentalist who could no long avoid pointing the finger at himself, Colin leaves behind his liberal complacency for a vow to make as little environmental impact as possible for one year. No more automated transportation, no more electricity, no more non-local food, no more material consumption…no problem. That is, until his espresso-guzzling, retail-worshipping wife Michelle and their two year-old daughter are dragged into the fray. Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein's film provides a front row seat into the experiment that became a national fascination and media sensation as well as an intriguing inside look at the familial strains and strengthened bonds that result from Colin's and Michelle's struggle with their radical lifestyle change.

Where in the world does your wine come from?

The Telluride Wine Festival, Center for Wine Origins and SCHILLING studio Gallery are pleased to announce the Where in the World Does Your Wine come from?” Nationwide Poster Challenge and Art Exhibition. The challenge seeks to discover artists and designers who create an educated and aesthetically pleasing poster design reflecting the promotion and protection of wine regions.

While excellent wine is produced around the world, it is important to know where your wine comes from. This particular competition encourages artists to promote the recognition of Champagne or Port wines, or an official wine region from across the globe. Artists, photographers and graphic designers are encouraged to submit their poster design. The challenge is the first nationwide, juried poster competition celebrating the grape and regions of origin for the world’s most diverse wines. The final selections for cash awards will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of this theme.

The Art Exhibition will take place in Telluride, Colorado during the Telluride Wine Festival June 24 to 27th, 2010. Each of the selected 20 finalist’s posters will be displayed during the festival and sold at SCHILLING studio Gallery with cash awards given to the “Best in Show” and “People’s Choice”.
CLICK HERE to learn more about the contest criteria, cash prizes and submission guidelines. Deadline for entries is May 15th, 2010
